NPMM: Week 2 - Bible Study

BENEFITS OF STUDYING THE BIBLE

by Tuck Yean Yong

Reading & meditation – Psalm 119:9-16

This week we ask: What are the benefits that come from regular studying of Scriptures – on our own and in small group?

First, time spent studying the Bible contributes to the development of our faith. How does our faith grow? By hearing the Word of Christ (Romans 10:17). The more we look intently the pages of the Bible, the stronger our faith becomes.

Second, studying the Bible helps us to worship God aright. How can we worship God if we do not follow the guidance He has given us in His Word on this matter? If we were not shown the right way to worship, it would be possible for our worship to degenerate into idolatry. We must know what kind of worship pleases God, and only the Bible reveals that. For instance, it tells us that we are to worship Him in Spirit and in truth (John 4:23). Without the revelation through Scriptures, we would be like the Athenians who worshipped an unknown god (Acts 17:23).

Third, studying the Scriptures nurtures hope. Christian hope is a confident expectation regarding the future. This is why Bible-believing Christians are neither despairing pessimists nor silly optimists. Despite all that is happening in the world which fills that human heart with uncertainties, we know God has everything in His hands.

Fourth, the benefit that comes from studying the Bible is that we all able to obey God. How can we obey Him unless we know His will and commandments? Without studying the Bible, we will not know His will and commandments and obedience will be impossible.

These benefits come from the revelation God has given us in the Scriptures. But we can only see this revelation when we read and study the Bible regularly.
